Gender inequality is reinforced by beliefs that give men greater authority over women’s choices, opportunities and participation. Community Pathway Africa works to challenge these attitudes by engaging men as partners in promoting women’s rights and preventing violence against women and girls.

Our Men’s Engagement Programme uses a training-the-trainer approach. Male participants learn about gender equality, respectful relationships, women’s rights and shared responsibility. They are then supported to lead discussions with other men in their families, workplaces and communities.

The programme focuses on religious and traditional leaders, husbands, male relatives, civil society representatives and other influential community stakeholders. Activities for couples also provide a safe setting for discussing communication, household responsibilities, financial decisions and family wellbeing.

Project Results

Through the programme:

• Male leaders have been equipped to educate other men about women’s rights and gender equality.
• Community conversations are helping to challenge beliefs that excuse discrimination, control and violence.
• Husbands and male relatives are becoming more involved in supporting women’s choices and economic activities.
• Couples are learning to communicate respectfully and make household decisions together.
• Religious, traditional and civil society leaders are using their influence to promote safer and more inclusive communities.
• Women’s leadership and participation are receiving greater support from men within families and community structures.

By involving men while keeping women’s rights and leadership at the centre, Community Pathway Africa is helping families and communities build fairer relationships and lasting support for gender equality.
